How we compare apps
We make SafeScan, so we're not a neutral reviewer. Here's how we keep our comparisons and guides honest anyway.
Where competitor facts come from
- Prices, ratings, sizes and requirements come from each app's US App Store listing. Prices are shown as Apple lists them, and they vary by country and change often.
- Privacy details come from the App Store privacy label, which is provided by each developer and not verified by Apple. We quote the categories as listed.
- Features come from the App Store description or the developer's own website. If a feature isn't mentioned there, we say "not listed in the description" rather than claiming the app can't do it.
- Every comparison links its sources at the bottom of the page and shows the month it was last checked.
Where labeling facts come from
Our guides describe US rules and cite the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): the list of major food allergens, how they must be declared, what "may contain" statements mean, and the definition of "gluten-free". Ingredient name lists come from the allergen dictionary SafeScan uses in the app.
What we won't do
- Invent numbers, test results or ratings.
- Hide what other apps do better. Each comparison has a section on where the other app is stronger.
- Tell you a food is safe to eat. SafeScan is an information tool, not medical advice. Your doctor or allergist is the right person to decide what's safe for you.
How we write guides
Every guide explains how to check a label yourself first, then shows where SafeScan can save time. We update a guide when the rules or the app change, and the "Updated" date at the top shows when it was last reviewed.
